How Physical Therapy Can Help You Get Healthier

From fad diets to detoxes, the media regularly bombards us with messages about how to get healthier. Even seemingly simple advice like “exercise regularly” can be difficult to navigate when fitness influencers battle it out to prove that their 30-day program is better than the rest.
At Prevail Physical Therapy we want to help you cut through the noise. Our trained experts take a holistic view of health and wellness and understand that good health isn’t just about physical health but mental and emotional health, too. We also know that everyone isn’t starting from the same place — and that’s okay! We’ll meet you where you’re at and help you develop strategies to find a health-promoting regimen that works for you.
Despite what you may have read on social media, evidence-based health-promoting behaviors are fairly straightforward. However, they can be difficult to implement, especially between work, family, and other obligations. We get it. That’s why we advocate for small, simple changes that can make a big difference.
Are you ready to start making healthy changes in your life? Call us today to set up an appointment!
What It Even Means to “Be Healthy”
The World Health Organization defines health as “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity,” which speaks to the complexities of health as a concept.
Good health also means different things to different people. For example, an 80-year-old on medication to manage high blood pressure and diabetes might consider herself healthy because she’s still physically active and can live independently. Meanwhile, a 20-year-old with no health conditions and excellent metabolic health might consider himself unhealthy because he struggles with exercise.
Living an entire life free of disease or illness is impossible for most of us. However, we can still strive to live as healthy as possible. Moving regularly, managing stress, and eating a nutritionally dense diet will help you feel your best, regardless of whether or not you meet the WHO’s (or anyone else’s) definition of “healthy.”

5 Simple Tips for Healthy Living from Our Team
To understand what a herniated disc is, it’s important first to understand the role of spinal discs. Your discs are like shock absorbers in 5 Simple Tips for Healthy Living from Our Team
- Meditate Daily: Taking five minutes each day to practice deep breathing and mindfulness can, like exercise, have a radiating effect on your physical and mental health.
- Get Enough Sleep: Getting a good night’s sleep is one of the most important things you can do for your overall health. A lack of deep REM sleep will have physical and psychological ramifications, affecting cardiovascular health, insulin levels, and cognitive abilities. Aim for 7-8 hours of sleep a night.
- Move Your Body: Exercise is another health-promoting behavior that has a big impact. Regular exercise improves your metabolic health, elevates your mood, and helps you stay mobile even as you age. Aim for 150 minutes of moderately intense exercise (i.e., walking) each week–that works out to about 22 minutes daily!
- Eat a Nutritious Diet: Although it may seem like certain foods cycle in and out of “health food” status, research has confirmed the ideal diet: one that’s varied, with plenty of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and lean meats. One simple tip for eating healthier is to emphasize adding healthy foods to your meals rather than restricting less healthy choices.
- Stay Hydrated: As part of that nutritious diet, ensure you drink plenty of water throughout the day. Hydration helps prevent injuries and may lessen your chances of developing chronic illnesses. Current recommendations vary but usually land at around 8 cups a day.

A Farewell to Dr. Tyler Sengamphan
We’d like to share news about the departure of our valued colleague and friend, Dr. Tyler Sengamphan, PT, DPT, CSCS. While we are saddened to see him leave, we are immensely proud and supportive of Dr. Sengamphan as he embarks on this exciting new chapter in his career, having recently accepted his dream job. Dr. Sengamphan has deeply impacted both our practice and the lives of his patients through his dedication, expertise, and compassionate care. He has written a personal message below to express his gratitude and bid farewell to the patients he has had the privilege of serving.

To My Valued Patients,
I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to personally share some important news with you: I will be leaving my current position at Prevail Physical Therapy, with my last day being June 20th, 2025.
It’s been a true privilege to work with you and be a part of your rehabilitation journey. I’m incredibly grateful for the trust you’ve placed in me and the progress we’ve made together.
I’ll be transitioning into a new role at Seattle Children’s Sports Physical Therapy Clinic, where I’ll be working exclusively with the pediatric and adolescent population. While this means I won’t be able to continue seeing most of my current patients in that setting, I want you to know how much I’ve appreciated our time together.
If you’re currently scheduled for visits beyond my last day, the team at Prevail Physical Therapy will work with you to transition your care to another physical therapist. The team here is comprised of competent and thoughtful individuals who will strive to help you achieve your goals. If you’d prefer to see me again before I leave, I encourage you to schedule an appointment before June 20th—I’d love the chance to see you before I go. Thank you again for allowing me to be a part of your care. I wish you continued health, strength, and success. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions during this transition.
Warm Regards,Tyler Sengamphan, PT, DPT, CSCS Prevail Physical Therapy

Have you been wanting to get into gardening, but don’t have the yard space? Consider planting a potted herb garden!
Container gardening is easy, convenient, and leaves you with a supply of beautiful fresh herbs. Almost any herb can be grown in a container, so the possibilities are endless!
Here are a few tips and tricks to ensure your potted herb garden is successful:
1. Be mindful of what you plant.
One of the exciting things about a potted herb garden is that you can grow as many different types of herbs as you want in the same container. However, before you start planting, be sure to do some research on the sun, water, and soil requirements of each herb.
For example, rosemary prefers hot and dry conditions, whereas parsley requires consistent moisture. As a result, they would not get along in the same pot.
2. Choose the right container.
As long as it has good drainage, you can use almost anything as an herb container. However, it’s important to be aware that using smaller pots means you need to be extra cautious in how much you water your herbs. Too much or too little water can be especially detrimental to an herb in a small pot.
3. Use high quality soil.
The best way to ensure a healthy start to your container garden is by using high quality soil. Container soil should be lighter in density than traditional garden soil. You can also add organic matter, like perlite or peat moss, to the mixture to improve drainage and moisture retention.
We hope you’re feeling ready to get started on your potted herb garden this season. Remember to have fun and good luck!
