Biomechanical Gait Analysis

Running is by far the most complex movement that is intrinsic to humans. A thorough video analysis and clinical exam are the bare minimum needed to start addressing running challenges. Our clinicians are experienced runners who have undergone advanced training in the biomechanical assessment of running. We have done thousands of running assessments, yet continue to immerse ourselves in the science of running, and develop new methods of assessment and highly targeted solution strategies. You will not find a team that is better suited to solving your running issues than right here at Prevail PT! We serve beginning runners, professionals, and all abilities in between.

What to Expect/Biomechanical Analysis Protocol

A standard Running Analysis (or walking) assessment consists of the following steps. Note that the full assessment process requires at least three hours of time, which can be done in multiple, one-hour visits (required if using health insurance) or in multiple-hour blocks of time if the client is paying out-of-pocket.

Client interview, intake review, & physical exam.

2nd hour/visit

Data Collection: video gait, pedobarography, and/or sEMG muscle testing.

3rd hour/visit

Review & interpretation of collected data. Correlation of findings with exam & case history.

Additional 2-5 hours

Suggested as indicated by findings:

  • Additional testing: Electromyography functional muscle recruitment measurements
  • Functional, sport/activity-specific strength control testing
  • Development of recommended exercises to address noted areas of opportunity for movement mobility, strength and control.

Components & Tools

Running Gait Analysis Payment Options

There are three options for payment for running gait analysis- insurance coverage, out of pocket or a hybrid.

  1. Since musculoskeletal issues are involved, we can provide services in a way that will be covered under health insurance physical therapy benefits. This usually helps decrease out-of-pocket costs, but it requires providing services according to our insurance contract which covers one hour per day of treatment. Three to five hours is recommended to do a thorough biomechanical workup (which takes a minimum of three hours) and to begin the biomechanical correction process. Insurance use requires multiple, one hour visits, which poses scheduling issues for some clients.
  2. The second option is a Runner’s Clinic or Runner’s Lab, which costs $145/hour, 3 hours minimum, 5+ hours recommended.  If paying entirely “out of pocket,” prepaid PT package is recommended for 5+ visits at $135/hr.
  3. There is also a hybrid payment option where multiple hours are scheduled on one day with the first hour is billed to insurance and the remaining hours are paid out of pocket at the time of service.

To help make the most of visit time, we appreciate receiving any treatment notes and imaging reports in advance of your visit.
