How Physical Therapy Can Help
Improve Your Bone Health

Have you been told you have osteopenia or were diagnosed with osteopenia or osteoporosis? If so, you’re not alone. It’s estimated that over 10 million Americans over 50 years have osteoporosis, with a higher prevalence in women (30%) than in men (15%).
Osteoporosis is a condition in which bones become weak and brittle. The good news is that you can prevent and sometimes stop or improve your bone density, particularly with exercise and other healthy lifestyle strategies. And that’s where the team at Prevail Physical Therapy Services can help.
Why Is Bone Health So Important?
We all have special bone cells that regulate the health and strength of our bones through a process called bone remodeling. Specialized cells break down older bone tissue, while others help form new bone. When bone loss exceeds bone formation over time, bone mineral density can decrease, and we develop osteopenia (weakened bones) or osteoporosis.
The risk for osteoporosis increases with advancing age, particularly in women, but lifestyle habits can also increase osteoporosis risk regardless of age or gender. The most important risk factors for osteoporosis-related fractures include:
- Physical inactivity
- Nutritional deficiencies (i.e., Vitamin D and lack of calcium)
- Low weight
- Low exposure to sunlight
- Long-term use of corticosteroids (i.e., Prednisone)
- Tobacco smoking
- High alcohol consumption
The Impacts of Osteoporosis
Osteoporosis is often called a “silent disease” because its early stages don’t cause obvious symptoms, such as pain or immobility. In fact, for many people, the first sign they have osteoporosis is that they suffer a fracture after falling. Unfortunately, that increased risk of fractures can have a big impact on quality of life, including an increased risk of severe injury and hospitalization.
At Prevail Physical Therapy Services, our physical therapists can help identify any limitations or weaknesses that affect your function and provide you with tools to build bone strength while reducing your risk of serious injury.
How Prevail Physical Therapy Services Can Help You Improve Your Bone Health
Physical therapy can play an essential role in helping you manage osteoporosis, particularly by guiding you through various progressive resistance training and weight-bearing exercises that strengthen your bones.
Whether or not you are already using exercise or other therapies to improve your bone health, an evidence-based exercise program designed to improve bone density and overall physical function plays a vital role in maintaining or even improving your bone density and the problems caused by bone loss.
If you’ve been diagnosed with osteoporosis, you’ve probably already seen videos or handouts with exercise suggestions for improving bone health, so you likely know that bone health exercises require very specific exercise types, loading, duration, and frequency to be effective.
On paper, it looks simple. In reality, every bone health exercise program needs to be tailored to your abilities and needs to be safe, effective, and sustainable.
That’s where Prevail Physical Therapy Services comes in.
Hello & Goodbyes!
Join us in celebrating new beginnings, honoring the people who have made a difference, and welcoming a new member to the Prevail family.
Farewell Morgan!
It is with mixed emotions that we say farewell to Dr. Morgan Sterling as he prepares to move out of state and begin his next chapter. Since joining our team, Morgan has brought so much to Prevail.
While we are certainly sad to see him go, we are excited for Morgan as he takes this next step.
Adios, Morgan! We wish you happiness and success in this next chapter!
Farewell Samantha!
With a heavy heart we say farewell to Dr. Samantha Kidder this month as she prepares to move out of state closer to family. Over the years Sam has brought so much dedication, expertise, and kindness to Prevail.
While we are incredibly excited for Sam as she begins this next chapter and has the opportunity to be closer to the people she loves, yet it is certainly bittersweet to say goodbye.
She will be deeply missed by her patients, coworkers, and the entire Prevail community. Thank you, Sam, for everything you have given to the Prevail Community! We will miss you!
Welcome to the team, Isobelle!
Born and raised here in Washington State, Isobelle has always had a passion for movement and an active lifestyle. Isobelle earned her Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science from Eastern Washington University, then later returned to EWU to earn her Doctor of Physical Therapy degree.
At Prevail, Isobelle takes a whole-person approach to care, recognizing that every patient’s recovery is unique and that healing involves more than simply treating an injury. Her goal is to partner with each patient to help them get back to the activities and things they love most.
We are thrilled to have Isobelle joining our team!
A Closer Look at Our Bone Health Program
We created a bone health task force that combed the medical evidence on the most effective exercise programs for bone density and used the findings to develop our own Bone Health Program.
We start with an assessment and medical history to help us understand your specific needs. Most people in need of improving bone density have enough years under their belts to have unique concerns, such as arthritis, old injuries, and other medical conditions. This assessment allows us to create a program that takes these concerns into account and uses exercises that meet you where you are.
Our program is taught 100% by physical therapy clinicians. They can help you manage any challenges while continually adjusting your program to meet your needs and keep you moving forward. Furthermore, our Bone Health program is typically covered by insurance providers under your normal physical therapy benefits!
When you complete your personalized program, you will have denser bones, stronger muscles, and improved overall function. However, we’ll also provide you with the information you need to continue an exercise program on your own and keep making improvements.

What Our Patients Are Saying
Real results. Real recovery. Real stories.
I damaged (not a tear) my rotator cuff and needed therapy to repair it. My therapist, Dr. Cody Lozier, was a great help, consistent and thorough. He developed a program that has worked very well. I just had my last appointment. My shoulder is almost fully recovered. Thank you, Cody. I highly recommend you to anyone looking for a therapist who listens, develops a program designed specifically for your issue, is kind, knowledgeable, and always helpful.”

Kids Heading Back to School? Prevent Backpack Back Pain
Between laptops, tablets, and textbooks, heavy backpacks are a reality for students heading back to school this fall. When backpacks are worn incorrectly or overloaded, they can contribute to back pain—especially discomfort in the upper back and shoulders.
The good news? A few simple adjustments can help your child stay comfortable, improve posture, and start the school year feeling their best.
A Healthier Backpack Starts With Smart Habits
Proper backpack fit, lighter loads, and good posture habits can reduce unnecessary strain on your child's growing spine and help prevent aches throughout the school year.
Find the Right Fit
Choose a backpack that fits your child properly. It should sit comfortably against their back and rest near the hips rather than hanging heavily from the shoulders.
Keep It Lightweight
A backpack should not exceed 10% of your child's body weight. Use a scale to check that books, devices, and supplies are not creating unnecessary strain.
Encourage Good Posture
Teach your child to stand tall by lifting their chest upward and keeping their spine aligned for healthier posture throughout the day.
Exercise of the Month
DUMBBELL SHOULDER PRESS
Stand tall with a dumbbell in each hand, elbows bent, and weights held at shoulder height with palms facing forward. Press both dumbbells overhead until your arms are fully extended. Pause briefly at the top, then slowly lower the weights back to shoulder height.
3 Sets, 10 Reps. (Materials needed: dumbbells)

Bright, refreshing, and packed with vibrant produce, this Miracle Red Juice is a delicious way to enjoy beets, carrots, apples, celery, citrus, and ginger in every sip. Blend up this colorful juice for a fresh, flavorful boost that’s perfect for starting your day or enjoying as an afternoon pick-me-up.
Enjoy This Healthy Recipe!
Miracle Red Juice
- 2 large beets
- 4 long carrots
- 2 apples
- 6 celery stalks
- 2 limes or lemons
- 2 inches of ginger
Prepare beets, carrots, apples, celery, limes (or lemons) and ginger by chopping into smaller pieces before placing into a juicer. As the skin of a beet is packed with antioxidants and nutrients, it is recommended to leave the skin on the beet. Beet skin and lemon peel (if using) have strong flavors, so you could also prepare half with skin and half peeled to adjust to the flavor, or simply peel all if preferred. Apples can be any color or variety. Do not peel the ginger, which you will add to taste as ginger can be spicy. After all ingredients are added to the juicer, blend until juiced and smooth. Drink juice as soon as possible to obtain all benefits of the antioxidants and nutrients. Miracle Red Juice can be absorbed more easily on an empty stomach. Drink one glass every other day or as needed.
