Although many physicians recommend a physical therapy clinic they may prefer, you are under no obligation to go to that clinic. No medical practitioner, insurance company, or other entity can insist you attend a specific physical therapy clinic. The choice is yours to make!

Some insurance plans, like HMO plans, have specific locations or offices you are required to choose or they may not remit payment. Do I need a doctor’s referral to receive treatment?

As a “Direct Access” state, you do not need a doctor’s referral to contact, be evaluated and treated by a licensed physical therapist in Washington state. However, referrals or prescriptions from your primary or specialty care provider may help to coordinate treatment and keep an updated plan of care on file.

Note: Some insurance plans do require a referral on file to remit payment for services.
